Biotech Trash Talk
Unfortunately, this blog isn’t dedicated to talking smack or hating on biotechnology (though I’m sure there’s a Substack for that). But, it’s not the exact opposite either. Together, we’ll explore how biotechnology can help us build a climate-friendly, resilient food system with a heavy emphasis on alternative proteins.
Occasionally, I’ll take a break from food science, biotechnology, and sustainability to talk about my graduate school experience. My enthusiasm for building mechanical keyboards may also leak through once in a while.
I hope you’ll follow along as I learn and grow as a scientist! Check out my A (Not So) Brief Introduction post for a more in-depth look into my interests.
Content Overview
The Alt Protein Breakdown: Spanning plant-based protein, cultivated meat, fermentation-derived protein, insect protein, molecular farming, and general food sustainability. I’ll also use this as a space to break down my publications into a more digestible form.
Sustainable Living: My personal experience with sustainable living, and how to decide what sustainable swaps are right for you.
Tipping Point: Posts with Science, Technology, and Society (STS) topics will invite you to think critically and collaboratively about our moral obligations as scientists, engineers, and other STEM professionals to ethically apply new technologies. How do we decide how much good technology can do? Who is to blame when technologies fail?
Grad School: As a PhD student in food science, Biotech Trash Talk may selfishly serve as a record of my grad school experience. What’s it like to be a grad student? Are the rumors really true?
Keebs & Games: I’m an avid keyboard (keeb for short) enthusiast in my free time with a growing collection. A lifelong tinkerer, I fell deep into the rabbit hole only a few years ago after building my first PC. I play MOBAs, RPGs, cozy games, platformers, and puzzle games.
Open Access Commitment
While I respect and understand creators who choose to activate Substack’s paid subscription model, this newsletter will always be open-access and free. I want to share my science with you, head-to-head with no paywalls in between. All opinions and posts are my own and are not affiliated with my institution.
